Kitagawa's garden "Monet Marmottan" (Japan)

In the year 2000, the small village of Kitagawa (1500 residents), in the region of Kochi in Japan, decided to create a garden in order

to limit the rural depopulation and boost local economy. Passionate by Monet’s works, the Japanese in charge of this project chose to make a copy of the garden of the Impressionist Master of Giverny.

The "Académie des Beaux-Arts" and the "Fondation Claude Monet" supported this out of the ordinary project, and shortly after the visit of the chief gardener of the foundation, Gilbert Vahé, the "Jardin de Monet Marmottan" was open in Kitagawa, in April 2000.

Even if the weather conditions as well as the ground are different, the result is spectacular. The "Clos normand" and the "Water garden" have been copied, and the visitors can find again the so particular ambience of Giverny. Since the opening, up to 80,000 visitors have come every year to be struck with Kitagawa’s Nympheas, this wonderful homage would have probably been appreciated by Monet, who was fascinated by Japan.

How can you go to Kitagawa ?

By taking a flight to Kochi’s airport (a 1 hour flight from Tokyo or a 1/2 hour flight from Osaka), then taking the train hugging the coast or hiring a car to Kitagawa (1h drive).

The garden is closed in January and February.
