Description
Of the family ‘’Rosacées’’, rose trees are originating from Asia. Climbing roses are available in all colours.
Gardening
Climbing roses love sun, but badly endure high winds. They grow against a wall, a tree or a support on condition they are "palissé" (tied up).
Monet and climbing Roses
At a time when rose trees were rarely planted in gardens, (they where then only cultivated for their cut flowers), Monet did not hesitate to save them a first choice place in his gardens. He used to love rustic rose trees like wild roses ‘’églantiers’’ (Rosa rubiginosa et Rosa eglanteria). His preferred one was the « Mermaid » with yellow flowers, the one he had made climbing up to his bedroom’s window. Rose trees ‘’Crimson Rambler’’ and ‘’La Belle Vichissoisse’’ were climbing up on the arches, stakes and trees all over the garden. On one of Monet’s latest pictures in Giverny, we can see him sitting down on a bench beside a rose tree which was probably seducing him with its perfume at a time when he was loosing his sight.
Where and when can we see some in Giverny ?
As early as in June and during the whole summer, the garden and the ‘’Clos normand’’ dress up with thousands of roses of all colours.
